The Magician: Screening & Live Score Wednesday, Oct 28 at 7pm

The Carolina Theatre of Durham presents a screening of Rex Ingram’s 1926 silent horror film “The Magician” set to an original live score written by Stack / Pratt / Mislock: Andy Stack (Wye Oak), Kelly Pratt (Beirut) and Tim Mislock (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”). The artists will perform the original live score for the FIRST TIME EVER inside the Carolina Theatre’s historic 1,000-seat Fletcher Hall on October 28.

Based on the 1908 novel by Somerset Maugham, “The Magician” traces the life of sculptor Margaret Dauncey (Alice Terry), who is paralyzed when one of her statues falls on her. Surgeon Dr. Arthur Burdon (Iván Petrovich) guides Margaret to a miraculous recovery, one witnessed by an unsetting, occultist magician named Oliver Haddo (Paul Wegener). Whilst Arthur and Margaret fall in love and plan to marry, Haddo cunningly stalks the bride-to-be with evil intent, hoping to continue his nefarious experiments in pursuit of creating and restoring human life.

This one-night-only live event melds Ingram’s eerie black-and-white opus, released the same year as the Carolina Theatre opened, with a performance of a new ambient score written by Stack / Pratt / Mislock in the Triangle in 2026.

This special presentation is part of the year-long celebration of the Carolina Theatre’s centennial anniversary.

About the Artists: Stack / Pratt / Mislock is a new musical endeavor from three music industry veterans and residents of the Triangle. Their music is a combination of composed works and group improvisation, which bridges stylistic space between ambient, electronic, folk, and free jazz.

Andy Stack, on drums and electronics, is the percussive heartbeat of the group. He is most prominently known as one half of the duo Wye Oak, his solo releases under the moniker Joyero, as well as a recording and touring contributor to Helado Negro and Lambchop. He is a prolific composer for film and advertising, including work for IBM, the Environmental Defense Fund, and AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”

Kelly Pratt, on an array of woodwinds, brass, and electronics, is a one-stop-shop multi-instrumentalist with hundreds of musical collaborations to his name, including David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Beirut, and Father John Misty. His compositions can be heard in films by Jim Jarmusch, Ari Aster, and the Fox TV show “Bob’s Burgers”, and his symphonic arrangements have been performed by The LA Phil, The NY Pops, and the SF Symphony, among others.

Tim Mislock, the ambient guitarist and former Broadway Original Cast Member, completes the trifecta. Having spent most of the 2010s as a touring member of indie bands The Antlers, and Tegan & Sara, Tim originated the role of Kryzystoff in the 4-time Tony award winning musical “Hedwig and The Angry Inch.”
