Special Characters is a Northeast Pennsylvania jam/funk/improv trio built around funky grooves, extended instrumental exploration, and a playful spy-movie sense of style. Featuring Sammy Ciravolo on guitar, Mike Allen on drums, and Tristan Haraschak on keyboards and flugelhorn, the band mixes tight musicianship with loose, danceable energy designed to keep the room moving. Their official bio describes the group as maintaining “funky excellence and liquid grooves,” with a sound rooted in movement, mystery, and improvisation.

The band released their first studio EP, Special Characters in The Spy Who Funked Me, in 2026, featuring tracks like “Tunnel Vision,” “Barn House,” and “The Spy Who Funk’d Me.” With long-form grooves, jam-band chemistry, and a funky live identity, Special Characters continue to build momentum as a fresh, dance-forward act in the regional jam scene.
