Overview
Join The Bee Conservancy staff and Matt Schlesinger of the New York Natural Heritage Program for a morning of community science!
Curious about what's flying around you and pollinating plants? Eager to contribute to global data collection?
Contribute to biodiversity science with a click of your smartphone! Join The Bee Conservancy and Matt Schlesinger, Chief Zoologist at the New York Natural Heritage Program and the cofounder of the Empire State Native Pollinator Survey at Minnewaska State Park Preserve for an adventure in community science as you help document local pollinators buzzing in your favorite green spaces.
Unwind while you observe and explore nature through the lens of pollinators — and your smartphone or camera! During this hands-on, outdoor event, we will capture images of bees and other insects and edit and upload them for iNaturalist and BeeMachine apps. We will be outdoors in a field of wildflowers, so please dress appropriately. To protect from ticks, we recommend that you wear long pants that you can tuck into socks. You will also be standing for a majority, if not all, of the event, so wear comfortable shoes.
We will be starting the event promptly at 11:00 am, so please aim to arrive 15-30 minutes before to avoid missing us. If you arrive late you will be directed to where we're heading, but there isn't a guarantee you will catch us. Please try to arrive in time for the event.
Note that you will receive an email with information about the best place to park and the meetup point one week before the event. In case of rain, you will be notified the night before if this event will be rescheduled. If so, the rain date will be Saturday, September 19th.
More about this event
New to community science and observational data collection? This mandatory webinar before the event will help you set up your account and device with the iNaturalist and BeeMachine apps, and equip you to capture clear, strategic images of bees and other pollinators. Then you’ll learn how to edit and upload these images to the iNaturalist and BeeMachine databases, where they can be used by 1M+ scientists, conservationists, ecologists, and researchers to support their work.
After RSVPing for the event you will be added to the Training Webinar on Thursday 9/10 at 12:00 pm. This will be recorded for participants who are unable to attend. We recommend that you watch the video before you join us in-person on 9/13.
