About this event
Come join us at AND Gallery for a night filled with cinematic magic. Our film club is the perfect place for movie enthusiasts to gather, watch, and discuss films together. Whether you're a casual movie-goer or a die-hard cinephile, this event is for you!
What to Expect: Curated by our resident film nerds: Think surrealist masterpieces, haunting silent films with live musical accompaniment, and underground treasures that challenge perspectives and expand minds.
Of course, no proper film night is complete without popcorn and sips to fuel the experience and discussions.
December Screening: Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) Directed by Jalmari Helander · Finland · 84 min · Finnish and English with subtitles Deep in Finnish Lapland, on the eve of Christmas, a secretive drilling crew blasts into the heart of Korvatunturi mountain, where legend says Santa Claus is buried. They’ve found something, and it isn’t the jolly gift-giver of greeting cards. This is the Santa of older, darker folklore: a figure who doesn’t reward good children so much as punish the naughty ones.
Down in the valley, young Pietari has been reading up on the old stories, and he’s starting to suspect the truth. Then the reindeer herd his father depends on turns up slaughtered, local children begin to vanish, and the town’s heaters and hair dryers go missing. When Pietari’s father and his fellow herders catch a wild, silent old man in a wolf trap, they think they’ve found a way to recover their losses. Pietari knows better.
Part horror film, part dark fairy tale, and part deadpan comedy, Rare Exports grew out of Helander’s cult short films and has become an offbeat holiday favorite. It’s a gorgeously shot, snowbound alternative to the usual seasonal fare, and its final act delivers one of the strangest and most satisfying twists on Christmas mythology you’ll ever see.
Content note: rated R for language and some (non-sexual) nudity. Not a family Christmas movie, despite starring a kid.
We look forward to seeing you at AND Film Club!
